My first tailoring project was a disaster. One day I broke about four needles, and I couldn’t sew anything; all the material was wrinkled, and I didn’t want that. I walked forward for a long time using the first needle that fell into my hand. Then I read on the packaging of those (yes, I bought them often) and saw that it was written for what they are. It went a little better until we reached the elastic materials, and it was a disaster again! Project completed with a lot of unnecessary effort because it’s easy to get information, but it doesn’t always occur to you that even choosing a sewing needle for your home machine is an ART.
Guide for Small Sewing Needles
Did you know that the structure of a sewing needle is not just the “needle’s ear”?
The needle is used depending on the thickness of the material and the thickness of the thread. It is very important to choose the needle according to the chosen material so as to change each project to have satisfactory results.
Did you know that the ideal life of a needle for a household sewing machine is 8 hours?
Did you know that, most often, needles are consumed due to broken thread or protruding from the ears of the needle, jumping steps or stringed thread, degraded material?
Needles for the household sewing machine are chosen depending on the thickness of the material.
For example, using a thick needle to sew a delicate material will visibly pierce the fabric and push the fabric under the plate, leading to the sewing machine jamming.
If a thin needle is used on thick and compact materials, it can break under the pressure of the mechanism.
On synthetic materials, an unsuitable needle can destroy the material’s fibers, being also the cause of the threaded thread.
Needles for Defective Household Sewing Machine Cause:
- stitched threads
- breaking the thread
- jumped or irregular steps
- wrinkling of the material
- abnormal noises during sewing
The needles are manufactured by several companies, some known, some less known, each with its needle identification system.
Universal Needles
they have a slightly rounded tip, ideal for sewing a wide range of materials
- 60 chiffons, organza, fragile materials
- 70/80 shirts, linen blend, lightweight materials
- 80/90 in
- 90/100 tablecloths, winter clothes, etc.
Jersey
medium spherical tip, used for elastic fabrics, pullover, wool, boucle wool
- 70/80 jersey
- 70/80/90 pullover
- 80/90 big sweater
- 90 lycra
Stretch
Medium spherical tip, used for elastic and very elastic materials. The special recess prevents any jumping or stringing steps, especially in the case of very elastic materials
- 75 jersey subțire
- 75-90 jersey-silk blend, etc.
- 90 lycra
Jeans/Denim
Medium spherical tip easily penetrates hard and thick materials without destroying the fabric. The rod is tightened and prevents the needle from deforming, thus reducing the sewing machine needle breaking or threading risk.
It is used for denim, jeans/jeans, or compact materials.
- 90 was plastic, material, and service
- 90/100-bed linen, synthetic leather
- 90/100/110 jeans
- 100/110 work uniforms
Final Verdict:
Each company has its needle identification system. For example, SCHEMTZ uses only one color to identify the type of needle, and the thickness is written on the flat side of the needle.
Instead, Singer uses two colors to identify the thickness of the needle. The color of the bead explains the type of material that the needles are recommended to use, and the line specifies the thickness of the material. The number of the needle is stamped on the flat side.
This post results from extended documentation, and everyone assumes responsibility for what they sew and for the type of needle chosen.
